For the first time ever, respondents to the census were allowed to indicate more than
one race. The overwhelming majority of respondents to Census 2000 (98 per cent) reported only one race. The largest group (75 per cent) reported White alone. Another 12
per cent reported Black or African American alone. Just under 1 per cent of the population indicated only American Indian and Alaska Native, and 4 per cent indicated Asian only. Among those indicating only one race, the smallest race group was the population of Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders, accounting for only 0.1 per cent of the total US population.
The remainder of the single-race respondents (5 per cent) indicated that they were 'Some other race alone'.
The US Census Bureau says that in the next 50 years the US Hispanic and Asian population will tnpie as whites drop to only half of the total population.
