Subject

1) a noun: Carrying this test successfully was helped by the careful investigations of outstanding scientists. — Успішному проведенню цього дослідженню допомогли ретельні дослідження видатних вчених.

2) an infinitive (when the gerund is used after the predicate in sentences with the formal subject it or in sentences with the formal subject there): It is conventional starting the engine after its being heated. — Прийнято запускати двигун, коли він нагріється.

3) a finite verb form (when the gerund is used in sentences with the formal subject there): There was no absorbing gases on the surface of solids. — На поверхні твердих речовин гази не абсорбувались.

Predicative

1) a noun: The main point of a transformer is providing the change of voltage. —Основним призначенням трансформатора є забезпечення зміни напруги.

2 ) an infinitive: His main occupation was washing reflectors with soapy water. — Його основним заняттям було промити відбивачі мильною водою.

3) a finite form of the verb in a subordinate clause (if the gerund is preceded by prepositions for, against, etc.): We are against postponing the negotiations on this question. —Ми проти, щоби переговори з цього питання були відкладені.

Part of a compound verbal predicate

used with verbs denoting the beginning, duration or the end of an action such as to begin, to start, to keep, to go on, to continue, to put off, to postpone, to delay to give up, to stop, etc.

1) an infinitive: She kept varying over and over again the dimensions of the condenser plates. — Вона знову і знову продовжувала змінювати розміри конденсаторних пластин.

Object

1) a noun: The turbulent flow of gases produces cooling. — Турбулентний потік газу спричиняє охолодження.

2) an infinitive: Nowadays engineers prefer using semi-conductors for generating heat and cold. — На сьогодні інженери переважно використовують напівпровідники для отримання тепла і холоду.

3) a finite verb form in a subordinate object clause: I remember having adopted this arrangement as being more economical. — Я пам'ятаю, що вони схвалили цей механізм як більш економний.
