In which profession does appearance matter much? Does appearance always correspond with the person's qualities if character?

• models (photo; fashion);
• TV hosts/presenters;
• airhostesses;
• businesspeople.

Should it happen to me to talk on the problem of the meaning of appearance, I'd start with making clear my sight of the picture. Times are changing. Increasing emphasis is being placed on people's physical appearances and people are responding accordingly (by buying cosmetics to cover their unsightly blemishes, apparently). Back in the days of "cavemen" looks were a non issue in comparison with today. The important question then is exactly' "how much" physical appearances matter to us nowadays. The answer is that it depends on a person, his profession and occupation. For the people of one way of life the appearance is important to some extent, but to others, the appearance is profession. Let's consider some examples. A doctor wearing jeans and makeup who is doing her job consciously is surely more appreciated by patients than one who is dressed according to the rules but who is careless and lacking in empathy. Or busyness people - it's no need to be tremendously beautiful or handsome for them, to run their enterprise successfully. The most important for them is to be clean and neatly dressed, and to be polite. In the cited cases physical attractiveness is just one of the many pieces that together form a complete puzzle. In fact, it's not even a very big piece of the puzzle. But sometimes, the appearance is much more important. If you are a fashion model, a TV presenter or an airhostesses your look, your appearance is your profession. It becomes one of your professional secrets to look younger that you are, and in fact you have to maintain yourself in a perfect form, keep fit, and shine perfectly, as if you had just been to a beauty Institution. So, being of one of these professions one should be ready that people will pay far too much attention to outward appearances and far too little to the substance that should be behind them. No one would care that appearance doesn't always correspond with the person's qualities of character.
