HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY

11. All memory is based on association. You can remember any new piece of information by associating it with something you already know. For example: - to spell the word `piece`, think of a piece of pie. - to recall the shape of Italy, think of a boot. You can train yourself to associate things by asking the questions why, when, how, where and who. Answering these questions will help you form a complete picture of the item and enable you to remember it. 1. Association. 2. Classification. 3. Resemblance. 4. Reading several times. 5. Revision of the vocabulary.
12. You can use substitution to remember abstract information when it is not easy to imagine a picture of what is being learned. When your hear or see a word that seems abstract or intangible, think of anything that sounds like or reminds you of the word you want to remember. For instance, if you want to remember a name, associate it with a visual image. Mike – Microphone, Bill – Electricity bill. 1. Skimming. 2. Printing. 3. Classification. 4. Substitution. 5. Asking question.
13. Children often learn short rhymes to help them remember things that are very often a problem. Many people still use these memory aids even when they are adults. For instance, to spell the word `receive` and `believe` and to remember which takes `ie` and which takes `ei`, children learn this rhyme: I before E except after C. 1. Rhymes. 2. Drawing pictures. 3. Making a plan. 4. Watching a film. 5. Singing a song.
