The other day my friend George came to see me and brought a small book ______ him. It was a guide ______ English conversation ______ the use ______ foreign travellers. I want one or two little things: a hat and pair ______ bedroom slippers”.

______ Wednesday we arrived ______ Waterloo station and went ______ a small boot shop. The shelves were filled ______ boxes ______ boots. Black and brown boots were all ______ the place. The man, when we entered, was opening ______ a hammer a new case full ______ boots.

George raised his hat and said: “Good morning”.

The man did not even turn ______. He said something which was perhaps “Good morning” and went ______ ______ his work.

George said: “I’ve been recommended ______ your shop ______ my friend, Mr X”. The answer ______ this ______ the book was “Mr. X is a worthy gentleman; it will give me the greatest pleasure to serve a friend ______ his”.

What the man said was: “Don’t know him; never heard ______ him”.

This was not the answer we expected.
