EVolo Skyscraper competition

eVolo Magazine invites architects, students, engineers, designers, and artists from around the globe to take part in the 2017 Skyscraper Competition [6]. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition is one of the world’s most prestigious awards for high-rise architecture. It recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the implementation of novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution. It is a forum that examines the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community, and the skyscraper and the city. Registration deadline: January 24, 2017. Project submission deadline: February 7, 2017. There is no limit as to the number of participants per team. Individual entries are accepted. This is a digital competition and no hardcopies are necessary. The participants should take into consideration the advances in technology, the exploration of sustainable systems, and the establishment of new urban and architectural methods to solve economic, social, and cultural problems of the contemporary city including the scarcity of natural resources and infrastructure and the exponential increase of inhabitants, pollution, economic division, and unplanned urban sprawl. The competition is an investigation on the public and private space and the role of the individual and the collective in the creation of a dynamic and adaptive vertical community. It is also a response to the exploration and adaptation of new habitats and territories based on a dynamic equilibrium between man and nature – a new kind of responsive and adaptive design capable of intelligent growth through the self-regulation of its own systems.

There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to the participants to engage the project without constraints in the most creative way. What is a skyscraper in the 21st century? What are the historical, contextual, social, urban, and environmental responsibilities of these mega-structures? Thus eVolo Magazine is committed to continue stimulating the imagination of designers around the world – thinkers that initiate a new architectural discourse of economic, environmental, intellectual, and perceptual responsibility that could ultimately modify what we understand as a contemporary skyscraper, its impact on urban planning and on the improvement of our way of life.

Major international competitions (Europe)

In Europe, competitions are a fairly standard approach to getting built work (as many winning submissions are built, and not always with political or familial ties). They're also a way for younger firms to make their mark. However, in order to take part in the real commission architectural competition participants need to be from the EU countries. Europe has Design Ideas competitions that are open to the entire world. In this chapter we will cover two of them related to the design of energy efficient building.

6.4.1 Olymp’Arts Competition 2019

“Olymp’Arts” is an international non-profit non-governmental organization with its headquarters in Switzerland (Geneva) with founding president Mr. Marc Verriere. Olymp’Arts Competition is the first modern and multi-disciplinary artistic competition based on the Art Olympiads as defined by the ancient Greeks. To respect the historical calendar, the Olymp’Arts will be held every 4 years (olympiad), 3 years after each summer sports game. The artists, students, amateurs or professionals, will compete in 11 disciplines facing a jury represented solely by a worldwide audience. These 11 disciplines are: Animation, Architecture, Art of gesture, Cinema, Comic, Dance, Drawing, Music, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture. Based on strong values such as universality and non-violence, the Olymp’Arts will reward 3 works in each discipline, which will have won over the heart of the public. The theme for Olymp’Arts Competition 2019 is “ENERGY”. “This theme is the symbol of a time. Energy, in all its formats, is indeed the central concern at the beginning of the 21st century. This concept of energy concerns us all, because we can, and we must think, design it, save it and invent it. Invent new energy that will help the world grow peacefully. These new energies await us. They are there, both hidden and under our eyes. Let us open our eyes to light, to harmony, to energy, to physical and creative. Those who make it emerge in all its formats and in all fields are real artists!” [7].

One of the missions of the Olymp’Arts is to give a chance to the greatest artistic works – whose authors do not possess the means of promotion – to be recognized as such by the global public and to give birth to new masterpieces. Here we are concerned about the “Architecture” discipline, which presentation is describe as follows:

“Presentation - Creating bridges, houses and buildings, architects bring structure to our lives. Thanks to their contributions, cities get painted with colors and new forms. Both aesthetic and original, their creations are true works of arts. In addition, they also have the power to transform our surroundings, to make them harmonious while preserving nature. It’s a heavy responsibility that has the ability to improve living conditions for all of humanity. In an era of sustainable development and energy preservation, the theme of the first modern art Olympiads is more relevant than ever for these artistic builders.”[7]

In this competition you and your team are free to choose any style and genre. Your project submission need to be composed of two parts: excerpt and the actual work. Both the work and the excerpt must take into account ecology, the environment, renewable energy and the protection of nature.

Excerpt

The excerpt includes an architect’s drawing and a photograph of a part of the model. There must be no signature of any kind that would allow determining the artist or a group of artists. The deadline to submit the excerpt is set on December 31st, 2017. The excerpt will be anonymously published for the worldwide audience to see it during the selection phase will start March 31st, 2018. The results of the selection process, decided by the worldwide public, will be released the concerned artists by September 30th, 2018, at the latest.

Work

The work includes a mock-up composed of two parts that come together, at a scale of 1/200. The deadline to submit the final work is set on May 1st, 2019. The work will be presented to the public during a daily exhibition throughout the whole Olympiads period. Image technical standards must be in jpg. or png, of high definition – minimum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels – 1080p.

Artists’ selection: The selections will start the year before the event from March, 30th to August, 31st. The excerpts that the artists have transmitted to the organization will be presented to the members of the global public anonymously and randomly. Then, they will be submitted to the votes of the global public. The results of the selections, allowing twenty works in each discipline to participate in the event, will be made public on September, 30th of the same year in the website of the organization. Selection by the global public: The selections will allow members of the global public to elect twenty works in each discipline. This selection will take place directly from the organization website via the voting page from March, 30th to August, 31st in the year preceding the event.

To be fair, the excerpts will be presented to the global public anonymously and in random order so as not to influence the votes. In addition, each excerpt will be submitted to the global public the same number of times.

It is recalled that only the excerpt of the work will be submitted to the votes of the global public during the selections.
