Customs Services and other Law enforcement agencies around the world use canine teams in everyday activities because dogs can sniff out narcotics and explosives and currency which machines cannot trace. Teams consisting of a dog and a handler are used to screen arriving aircraft, vessels, vehicles, cargo, baggage, mail, premises and people.
The Customs uses a wide variety of dogs. But as drug detector dogs are often on show in public areas (such as airport terminals) Customs Services prefer to choose the breeds of which people are not frightened.
The basis for the training is the dog’s natural instinct to hunt and retrieve and its desire to please its handler. Initially the dogs are encouraged to search for hidden training aids. Concealments are progressively made more difficult and the full range of drugs is introduced.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) was formed on the 18 April 2005, following the merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise Departments.
Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is a non-ministerial department of the UK Government responsible for the collection of taxes and the payment of some forms of state support.
The HM Revenue & Customs is responsible for the administration and collection of duties and taxes including income tax and corporation tax and stamp duty land tax.
Powers of officers: HMRC is a law enforcement agency which has strong personnel of Criminal Investigators responsible for investigating Serious Organised Fiscal Crime. This includes all of the previous HMCE (HM Customs and Excise) criminal work (other than drug trafficking) such as Tobacco Alcohol and Oils smuggling. They have aligned their previous Customs and Excise powers to tackle previous Inland Revenue criminal offences. They are responsible for seizing (or preventing the loss of) billions of stolen pounds of HMRC’s revenue. Their skills and resources include the full range of intrusive and covert surveillance and they are a senior partner in the Organized Crime Partnership Board.

Королевская служба налогов, сборов и таможни является органом, осуществляющим в соответствии с законодательством Великобритании и ЕС функции по контролю и надзору в области таможенного дела, а также специальные функции по борьбе с контрабандой, иными преступлениями и административными правонарушениями.
