ESSAY ASSESSMENT CRITERIA (max 10 points)
DISCUSS BOTH VIEWS AND EXPRESS YOUR OPINION
Recommended word count – 250 words
Structure (max 0.5 point)
0.5 point – the student uses paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately
0 points –paragraphing is inadequate / the student does not write in paragraphs.
Introduction (max 1 point)
1 point – the task has been effectively rephrased and/or the thesis statement is clearly focused
0.5 point – the task has been only partly rephrased and/or the thesis statement lacks focus
0 points – the task hasn’t been rephrased or there is no introduction and/or there is no thesis statement in the introduction.
Topic sentences in the main body (max 1 point)
1 point – each paragraph contains a valid topic sentence which clearly focuses on the main idea/problem
0.5 point – not all the paragraphs contain a relevant topic sentence / not all the topic sentences are clearly focused
0 points – all the topic sentences are irrelevant / there are no topic sentences.
Main body: supporting arguments (max 2 points)
2 points – each paragraph contains 1-2 arguments, all of which are fully developed, extended and supported
1.5 points – each paragraph contains 1-2 arguments. One argument in one of the paragraphs is inadequately developed, unclear or irrelevant.
1 point – each paragraph contains 1-2 arguments. More than 1 argument is inadequately developed, unclear or irrelevant.
0.5 point – the student addresses the task only partially (only one point of view is discussed)
0 points – the student doesn’t adequately address any part of the task and/or the answer is completely unrelated to the task.

Coherence and cohesion (max 1 point)
1 point - the student logically organizes ideas and/or effectively uses a range of cohesive devices
0.5 point –ideas may not be logically organized throughout the response (there might be an occasional breach of logic) and/or cohesive devices are inadequate, repetitive, under- or overused
0 points –ideas are not logically organized and/or cohesive devices do not indicate a logical relationship between ideas.
Conclusion (max 1 point)
1 point - the student summarizes the main points and/or clearly restates their opinion
0.5 point – the conclusion contains some irrelevant ideas not discussed in the main body; the student either summarizes the main points or expresses/restates his/her opinion
0 points –there is no conclusion at all.
Register (max 0.5 point)
0.5 point – the essay is written in an appropriate (academic/neutral)style, the punctuation marks are correct, the student may make 1-2 minor stylistic mistakes
0 points – the student makes more than 2 stylistic or punctuation mistakes, the register is informal and inappropriate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy (max 1.5 points)
1.5 points – the student uses a wide range of structures and may make 1-2 minor mistakes
1 point – the student uses a variety of structures, but may make 3-4 mistakes
0.5 point – the student uses a limited range of structures and/or makes more than 4 grammatical mistakes, some of which may impede communication
0 points – the student only uses basic structures and/or makes numerous mistakes which severely impede communication.
Lexical Resource (max 1.5 points)
1.5 points – the student uses a wide range of subject-specific vocabulary attempting to use some uncommon lexical items. There may be 1-2 inaccuracies in spelling, word formation or word choice.
1 point – the student uses a sufficient range of subject-specific vocabulary, but may make 3-4 mistakes in spelling, word formation or word choice.
0.5 point - the student uses a limited range of vocabulary, most of which is not subject-specific. There are more than 4 mistakes in spelling, word formation or word choice, which may cause some difficulty for the reader.
0 points - the student only uses basic vocabulary, with very limited control of spelling, word formation or word choice; errors are numerous and cause strain for the reader.

Thesis statement (max 1 point)
1 point – the thesis statement is valid (it focuses on the main idea/problem)
0.5 point – the thesis statement is not clearly focused
0 points – there is no thesis statement, or it fails to communicate a relevant message
Main body: supporting arguments (max 3 points)
3 points – the student presents a relevant and fully developed response to the question providing 1-2 extended and clearly-focused arguments in each body paragraph
2.5 points – the student presents a clear response with relevant ideas but 1 of them is not sufficiently developed
2 points – the student addresses all parts of the task although some parts are more fully covered than the others with less than 2 clearly-focused and well-developed arguments in one of the paragraphs
1.5 points – the student addresses the task only partially, with more than 1 idea inadequately developed or unclear
1 point – the student responds to the task only in a minimal way, presenting few ideas, which are largely irrelevant, undeveloped or repetitive
0.5 point – the student barely responds to the task, presenting only 1 or 2 ideas, which are irrelevant or undeveloped
0 points – the answer is completely unrelated to the task.
Transitions (max 1 point)
1 point - the student uses a variety of transitions appropriately
0.5 point – the student uses a limited range of most common linkers (firstly, for example, in conclusion), some of which are inaccurate or repetitive
0 points – the student uses only basic cohesive devices (coordinators, subordinators, adverbs, e.g. and, but, also), and those used do not indicate a logical relationship between ideas.
Conclusion (max 0.5 point)
0.5 point - the student summarizes the main points and restates the thesis statement
0 points – the conclusion contains some irrelevant ideas, not discussed in the main body; the thesis statement is not restated.
