Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were vacationing at their uncle’s lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the foggy figure that haunts the lake. Justin and Mary were determined to see the ghostly creature before their vacation was over. «Is it foggy outside?» Mary asked as Justin peered out the window. «Yup! Let’s go!» Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary on his heels. It was only 5:00 AM, so everyone else in the house was still asleep. As they crept through the kitchen to the back door, Mary sniffed the air. It had faint scent of coffee and something sweet. She shrugged it off and followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out the boat dock. The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything. «Do you see anything?» Mary asked, leaning forward for a closer look. «Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?»

Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He‘d been telling them stories for years, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling it wasn’t made up.

Mary shook her head. «Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The foggy figure haunts the lake; we‘re on the dock.Maybe that’s why we can’t see him. The people in the story were in boats». «You want to go out on the water?» Justin asked Mary looked around; trying to find Uncle Thomas’s boat, but the fog was too thick. «Mom and Dad will be really mad if we go out on the lake alone in this fog» Justin said. Mary shrugged. “Maybe we don’t have to go anywhere. We could sit in the boat while it’s docked.” «Okay» Justin crept toward the end of the dock. He could barely see the outline of the ship. «I’ll go first». He carefully lowered himself into the boat and sat beside him. She was getting nervous now that they were on the water. “See anything?” They looked around gradually, the fog began to lift. Mary turned around and screamed. «The foggy Figure!» It was in the boat with them! Justin and Mary hugged each other in fear, but then heard a laugh. Justin leaned toward the foggy figure.

Once upon a time there was, nor here, nor there, but at the back of beyond, an old fisherman who had an ambitious wife. The old fisherman once went out to sea to catch fish. He soon caught a beautiful, big carp. And, oh, marvel of marvels, the carp suddenly began to speak “Poor fisherman, please let me loose! I shall reward you so you won’t regret it. All your wishes shall come true.” So at these words, the old fisherman allowed the carp to return to the sea. Then he went home, and his wife asked him “Well, what did you catch? Did you bring something with you?”

“I caught a very beautiful carp.”

“Then why didn’t you bring the fish home?”

“The poor fellow implored me so to let him go, and then he would fulfil all our wishes.”

“Then return to him and tell him that I would like to have a very fin house.”

They had a tiny cottage on the seashore. The fisherman walked back to the seaside. He stopped at the water’s edge and shouted “Hallo, carp, do you hear me? My wife asks you to build us a fine little house on the seashore!”

“Go home, my good man! Your wish has already come true!”

And sure enough, when he got home, a wonderful house was standing there. His wife was bustling about in the kitchen. For a while she was very happy. Yet one day his wife again said to him “Now listen, return to that carp and tell him that I am sick of that house, let him give us a castle and make us count and countess.”

So the man again went to the seashore and shouted: “Hallo, carp, do you hear me? That hussy, my wife, won’t leave me in peace!” After a while fish rose to the surface and asked: “What is it your wife wants now?”

“She wants a castle and asks you to make us count and countess.”

“Go home! Her wish has already come true!”

On returning home he saw a marvellous castle and his wife strolling leisurely trough the rooms as a countess. “Are you satisfied at last?” asked the fisherman. His wife was happy indeed. Next morning, they were hardly awake, when the woman said “Listen! Go back to that carp and tell him I would like to be a queen and live in a palace.” What could the poor fisherman do? He walked sadly to the water’s edge and shouted “Hallo, carp, do you hear me? That hussy, my wife, won’t leave me in peace.” After a while the fish emerged and asked “What does your wife want now?”

“She wants to be a queen and live in a palace.”
