Семейная терапия оценивается как многообещающая (Gurman & Kniskern, 1981). При этом необходимо иметь в виду, что нет единой семейной терапии. Всеми исследованиями средний уровень улучшения для семей, прошедших курс семейной терапии, оценивается в 73% (61% для супружеской терапии). Поведенческая супружеская терапия успешна прежде всего при нарушениях супружеских отношений средней тяжести, причем решающей компонентой является улучшение коммуникации. Оперантные методы очевидно противопоказаны при тяжелых расстройствах, но особенно успешны при терапии агрессии в отношениях между родителями и детьми (Patterson, 1975). Семейная терапия также показана при психосоматических проблемах в подростковом возрасте и при злоупотреблении наркотиками. Особый интерес в этой связи представляет тот факт, что результаты индивидуальной терапии при расстройствах отношений оцениваются скорее как неблагоприятные.

В целом, следует отметить явный недостаток исследований в этой области, поскольку многие семейные психотерапевты считают использование контрольных групп неприемлемым. Альтернативой является использование так называемой контрольной группы, получающей терапию по требованию («Treatment on Demand»-Kontrollgruppe; TOD; см. Gurman & Kniskern, 1981); участники контрольной группы начинают проходить курс терапии, а именно кризисной интервенции, только по требованию самой семьи (оценку см. также в главе 22).
