III. Let’s talk about family

The family is very important as a unit in our society. Nothing else but family can be an emotional center of people's life. Every mother feels great affection for her children and tries to bring them up in a proper way. Understanding between the members of the family and consideration  for others are very important in family relationship. Tenderness, warm-heartedness and respect must always be present in the family to make it friendly. A lot of activities help members of the family to be on friendly terms: discussing all the family plans together, going on trips hikes together, visiting museums, theaters, exhibitions and exchanging opinions about them, sharing the same joys and sorrows. Now I’d like to tell you about my family. Our family is not large. We are a family of four: my father, my mother, my younger brother and I. My name is Olga. I am seventeen. I am a school leaver. My younger brother is ten. He is a pupil of the fifth form. He looks like our father. As for me everybody says I look like my mother. I am an ordinary girl of 17. Our family lives in Vitebsk. We have a nice three-roomed flat on the fourth floor of a multistoried building. My mother is about 40. She looks pretty well. We all love dearly our Mum, and are always ready to help her about the house. We try to share our duties. My mother is an economist. The firm she works in deals with trading.

My father is an engineer in computers. He is considered to be an experienced engineer. We are very proud of him.My younger brother also has his duties about the house. He helps mother to set the table and wash the dishes. On Saturdays Dad joins us in our work about the house. He likes to make or repair something. We don't have such problems as misunderstanding between the members of the family. I think that it is due to the age of my parents and their character.

What is a good family?

I. Text

1. The article can be a good guidance for the young people who want to create a happy and harmonious family which is based on strong family traditions. A lot of activities help members of the family to be on friendly terms: discussing all the family plans together, sharing their hopes and dreams, feelings, solving their problems together.

2. Reading (IV абзац).

3. Nothing unites a family more than its traditions which include different norms, ways of behavior, customs and views. In united families these traditions are deep-rooted and passed from generation to generation.

4. That varies from family to family. Families with young children usually spend most of their time together because young children need a great deal of physical care and guidance.

II. Listen to the girl speaking about her eating habits and answer the questions below.

3. - First the chocolates are sold everywhere. Then if she doesn't eat them she had very bad

headackes and if she eats she feels better and happier.

III. Let’s talk about youth and society.

Youth is the part of society who saves and follows the traditions of preceding generations. They possess such powerful force that is able to invert this world heels overhead. Sure, this force must be directed at peaceful aims and be embodiment only of true values. However, modern youth do not keep their culture in such way. Thus, the new age is the new young people. In my opinion, there are some basis factors influencing on it. One of them is our society. It influences the formation of the teenagers’ true values more than their families do. A child grows in a family where he gets education and there is his primary socialization. But he or she has to make contacts with other people and their influence is not far always positive. Besides, there are different youth subcultures. Not all their values are true values. Many of them have the aim to oppose public foundations. Thus they damage teenagers’ minds and can incite them against the whole world. Another factor influencing young people is mass media. There are a lot of violent programmes and articles on TV and in printed press. Negative characters become the ideal heroes for children who try to imitate their behavior in real life. Teenagers become more nervous and aggressive, their psyche is seriously damaged and very often some of them commit crimes. So I consider that crime is one of the main problems of modern youth. Alcohol and drugs are also among the most actual problems nowadays. Children get their first experience in alcohol or drug use while studying at school. They do not understand how dangerous it is, how harmful it is for their health. Children see beautiful life with cigarettes and drugs in films and try to behave like  their heroes. They become addicted to these things and degraded later. However, I think not all the youth are such bad people without any moral standards and behavior who doesn’t think about their future. The most of them have true values, they are ready to study and work hard to  enjoy the life. But young people cannot do it without the help of the adults.

III. Let’s talk about the mass media.

The mass media play an important role in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views. Of course, not all newspapers and TV programmes report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information. It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren't interested in ordinary events. That is why there are so many programmes and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn't usually make headlines. Bad news does. Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude in people's private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed? The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.  Still, many people prefer radio. It's good to listen to it in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house. Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra details, comments and background information. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.
