Why is Multimedia Important ?

• Digital audio/video is revolutionizing music, film, game, and video & audio industries • Convergence of computers, telecommunication, radio, and TV – Caused by technology and competition – Dramatic changes in products and infrastructure • New application potential – Huge potential markets – Improving our lives (learning, entertainment, and work) • Interesting technical issues

Multimedia has become hot and been emerged in CS/IT since 1985

Forces Driving the Multimedia Revolution

• Evolution of communication and data networks: Increasing availability of bandwidth on demand in the office, home, road.... Thanks to high-speed data modems, cable modems, hybrid fiber-coax systems, xDSL, wireless. • Ubiquitous access to network. Via local-area networks (LAN), wireline and wireless networks, Internet, world wide web,  “anywhere, anytime”. • Fast processor and large capacity storage devices, including 3-D hardware. Moore’s law: computation and memory capacity of chips doubles every 18 months or so.

Where can we use different multimedia technologies?

Multimedia technology refers to interactive, computer-based applications that allow people to communicate ideas and information with digital and print elements. Professionals in the field use computer software to develop and manage online graphics and content. The work that media technology specialists produce is used in various media, such as training programs, web pages, and news sites.

Media in the press, newspaper, radio and TV context

mass media

- Media in communications: cables, satellite, network –

transmission media

• Multimedia: refers to various information forms text, image, audio, video, graphics, and animation in a variety of application environments

Computer-based techniques of text, images, audio, video, graphics, animation, and any other medium where every type of information can be represented, processed, stored, transmitted, produced and presented digitally

Multimedia imposes new requirements on all parts of the system architecture:

 • Representation - digitization and coding

• Storage - database, larger volumes and new access patterns

• Processing - OS, scheduling, indexing, searching

• Understanding - speech recognition, content analysis

• Production - more complex authoring and user interface software

• Presentation - user perception, user friendly in HCI (Human Computer Interface)

• Protection – media encryption, copyright, privacy

• Distribution - media delivery and broadcast

• Communication - media transmission over network/internet, session control

Multimedia finds its application in various fields, including, advertising, art, education, entertainment industry, technology, medicine, mathematics, business, scientific research and space-time applications and other information processes involving people.

In education, multimedia is used to create computer training courses and reference books, such as encyclopedias and compilations. Training courses allow the user to go through a series of presentations, thematic text and related illustrations in various formats for presenting information. Entertaining education, combining education and entertainment, especially multimedia entertainment. The theory of teaching was significantly developed in connection with the advent of multimedia.

In the industrial sector, multimedia is used as a way of presenting information to shareholders, management and colleagues. Multimedia is also useful in organizing staff training, advertising and product sales around the world through virtually unlimited web technologies.

In Medicine, Doctors can also receive training with the help of virtual operations or simulations of the human body, affected by disease, widespread viruses and bacteria, thus trying to develop techniques for its prevention. By graphic means of multimedia, combined with tomographic technology, it is possible to effectively study the human body, its organs.

Multimedia is multiple information environments - interfaces that provide input / output of information of various types to a computer, computer creation, processing and display of information of different levels and structures for perception by different sense organs of a person at the same time.Multimedia is a set of information environments - channels, each of which has its own specific form that corresponds to its level and purpose.
